It may not have the most original of names, but Wales's third largest city has much to distinguish it from those other Newports. A city steeped in Celtic, Roman, medieval and industrial history, it was here that the Chartist Uprising took place in 1839. In Caerleon, there are Roman remains to rival anywhere in the UK, as well as stunning scenery within walking distance of the city centre. It was while walking along the Ridgeway that Newport-born poet W H Davies was inspired to pen the immortal words 'What is this life, if full of care/We have no time to stand and stare'.
From the incredible working Transporter Bridge to the excavated Roman amphitheatre, the flight of fourteen canal locks to the reed beds of Newport Wetlands, the magnificent 17th century Tredegar House to the futurist River Usk footbridge, be certain Newport has plenty to offer.
