FiveSquare (5SQ) is a NEW game similar to Tic Tac Toe but much more challenging. This high tech version of the old classic is played on a five square by five square battle field. Win the game by capturing 4 of the squares in a row - horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. Game 1 has a free square (with green colored text) that is randomly selected at the start of the game and can be counted (no selection required) by both players as one of their captured squares in the 4 squares in a row needed for a win. Game 2 is played the same as Game 1, except there is no free square. Both games can be played by one or two players. Game wins are scored are for each player – tie games are not counted. The scores are reset by choosing one (1P) or two players (2P), or by selecting a different game (G1 or G2) to start a game series.

The challenger gets to pick a Player color (Red or Blue) for the game series and plays first. The defender plays the color that was not selected by the challenger. The Player button changes text and text color to indicate who's turn it is. In the one player (1P) mode, the 1P text color is set to the challenger's color for the game series, and during the defenders turn all the possible selections are disabled (grayed out) while the defender is selecting a square to capture. This selection process will take up to 10 seconds; be patient artificial intelligence at work! When either player selects a square, that square changes text color to the player's color and is considered captured by that player, and cannot be selected again; it is disabled (grayed out). When a player captures 4 squares in a row, the message “Wins!” in the appropriate color is posted next to the Player button, the winning row blinks, and selection of all the squares is disabled until a new game is started. To start an new game tap the New Game button. The loosing player gets to go first in the new game. In the one player mode (1P), if the defender lost the previous game, the message “New Game – defender (Blue or Red) to play first” will be displayed while the defender is selecting a first square to capture in the new game.

In the one player (1P) mode, tie games will be indicated by the message “Tie Game” then “Game Over” if the tie game occurs when it is the defender's turn but before the defender plays - the defender will play first in the next game. If a tie game occurs on the challengers turn, the challenger must declare a tie before selecting a square or miss playing first in the next game. In the two player mode (2P), both players are responsible for declaring a tie game before playing on their turn in order to play first in the next game. To continue following a declared tie game tap the New Game button.

If you see a “force close or wait” error message select the “wait” option to continue. This is typically is caused by trying to make a selection when selections have been disabled (not your turn or game over), while the defender in the one player mode is “thinking,” or when trying to change games or players during a game. To make a selection, wait for the available selection squares and Player button to be enabled (white background color). To change the game or player, wait until these buttons are enabled at the start of a new game. The New Game button remains enabled throughout a game and can be selected at any time, except while the defender is “thinking” in the one player mode.
