Mosquito-borne diseases such malaria, dengue and chikungunya account for 17% of the estimated global burden of all infectious diseases. The most deadly, malaria, caused an estimated 627 000 deaths in 2012. The world's fastest growing vector-borne disease is dengue, with a 30-fold increase in disease incidence over the last 50 years. Chikungunya, also transmitted through mosquito bites, did not even exist in the Western Hemisphere prior to November, 2013; but over a million cases have now been reported in the Western Hemisphere alone.
