History of the Event
In 2007 Nathan Fa'avae was tired of his mates saying there were not enough women interested in Adventure Racing. He believed that the sport had a much wider appeal but the traditional team format of 3-males and 1-female was not an easy way for women to participate. Ridiculed for the idea, he launched the Spring Challenge in Hanmer Springs with 327-women entering - making it the highest participated adventure race in NZ at the time. The following year in Kaikoura 600-women took part, the event continued to grow as it toured to Nelson Lakes National Park, Motueka, Marlborough, Methven and in 2013 was held in Gibbston (Queenstown) with a record number of 960-entrants.
