1.0 General Information
The Situation Prediction App is a special study app created within the European research project MUSES (Multiplatform Usable Endpoint Security) – https://musesproject.eu. The purpose of the study is to gain a deeper understanding in how people use their mobile devices in a work and a private context. We invited people, that agreed to participate in this study. Downloading and participating in the study means that you are agreeing with the terms below..
To achieve our research goal, the app will collect the following information:
- used and installed names of the apps
- connectivity status (connected to the internet via Wi-Fi, mobile, ...)
- interactions with the device, like clicking, scrolling, or swiping
- rough location provided by the device
- device status (if the device is rooted, protected by a password)
The collected data will be send to us from time to time automatically. To protect your privacy, we encrypt the collected data on the device with AES before sending and we do NOT store the unique ID of your device.
Please note that the app DOES NOT collect or store any content of your documents, such as visited URLs, videos, audio, texts, emails, etc.
Please note that the collected data will be used exclusively for research purposes and only in aggregated form. We will not share your data with anyone or use it for any other commercial or other services.
We do not collaborate with any intelligent services and we do not want to do this at any time.
2.0 Preparation and Installation
We kindly ask every participant to activate location tracking in the settings (settings -> location -> battery saving mode) BEFORE installing the app.
Please install the application at home or work.
The installation dialog shows general information and a randomly generated ID on the top. You will be asked to give a rough location by clicking on the button that matches your position (home or work).
The last button will start the application and leads you to the accessibility setting, which needs to be activated for our app (Situation Prediction Study). Accessibility allows us to gather information about clicks.
After activating accessibility, you can continue to use your device normally.
3.0 How to Use the App
The app will ask you about the purpose of your device usage, every time you unlocked the screen (see screenshot 2). Please chose "Privately" or "For work" when you already know the purpose of the usage. If you are not sure, you can click "Ask me later". You will then see a dialog again, when you turn off your display.
You will find yourself in the situation that, for example, you want to use your device privately but then you e.g. receive an important mail from office and you start reading it. This is one possible scenario of switching between a private and a work usage. In such a situation, you can adjust the current usage in the notification bar (see screenshot 3). If possible, do this before you change the usage (e.g. read the email from office). The radio button shows your current usage.
We would like to ask every participant to use the app for at least two weeks.
4.0 Troubleshooting
If you experience any issue, like the dialog is not showing anymore, please click on the app icon. Usually, clicking on the app icon does not show you anything, if everything is setup correctly. Otherwise, you will see the installation dialog (screenshot 1) again.
If this doesn't help you, try to uninstall and install the app again or get in touch with us, by sending an email to stanik@informatik.uni-hamburg.de
Thank you very much! We really appreciate your help. In case you would like to receive the results of the study or use the envisioned tool please do not hesitate to contact us or to just check our website after several months.
