Confederate General Robert E. Lee instructed Lieutenant General Jubal Early to attack the Union Capital. Learning of the Confederate movement, Union forces met the Confederate army just south of Frederick, Maryland at Monocacy Junction on the morning of July 9th, 1864. Although the Confederates won the battle, the day spent fighting allowed the Union army just enough time to send reinforcements to Washington. General Early’s army was forced to return to Virginia.
