The main purpose of the 'doomsday' application is simply to entertain to the user.
In the year 2012 will occur the end of the Mayan calendar, 5000 years after the calendar is finished, and some people think that the world will end, but until 2013 arrives we'll never know. ;-)
With 'doomsday' application, at least we will know how much is left for the end of the Mayan calendar.
Normal people little can do when it comes to interfere with or prevent the consequences of many of the risks that threaten our world, such as meteorites, supervolcano, megatsunamis....
Besides, the application includes a list of those potential risks that we, humans, have, so we can enjoy life a little more or build a shelter and just stay there until the danger passes. ;-)
