It is up for debate with regards to the exact derivation and evolution of this diminutive stringed instrument. It is generally conceded that the Charango originated shortly after the Spanish conquistadors arrived, so it is possibly inspired by their vihuela, banduria or lutes. If you've ever heard a Charango played by someone who knows how to use it, you realize what a wonderful energized sound comes from these little bundles of fun! The Charango has 5 pairs of strings tuned G C E A E. If you ignore the high E string, what remains is essentially a ukulele, which is the highest four strings of a guitar capoed at the fifth fret.
