Breast Cancer Ally is a tool specially designed to provide information about breast cancer and help patients at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center manage their symptoms. Developed by University of Michigan specialists, Breast Cancer Ally helps patients through every stage of treatment, from the initial diagnosis, through surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and anti-estrogen therapy. As multidisciplinary breast cancer care becomes more and more complex, new tools are necessary to improve patient education and decision making, enhance patient-doctor communication, maintain patient engagement and improve outcomes. As the leaders in multidisciplinary cancer care, the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center is at the forefront of developing mobile technologies to enhance the cancer patient experience. Breast Cancer Ally is designed to help University of Michigan breast cancer patients navigate the complex nature of multidisciplinary breast cancer care. It delivers targeted educational content in a “just-in-time” format, with a smart home page that recognizes where the patients is in her cancer treatment. Other features include:* Decision aids to help patients with complex treatment decisions. * Information and tools at every stage of treatment, including surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and anti-estrogen therapy.* Preoperative and postoperative instructions and tools tailored to the patient’s specific surgery, including reconstruction.* Patient-reported side effect tracking with recommendations to manage side effects and guidance on when to call the health care team.* Treatment calendar, medication and appointment reminders. * Instructions, reminders and logs for drain management, post-operative exercises, chemotherapy side effects and more. * University of Michigan-specific information including driving directions, maps, clinic information, phone directory and links to U-M-based services including psychosocial support.* Patient-generated treatment summary for sharing with primary care physicians and consultants.Breast Cancer Ally uses a novel approach to cancer education called “Targeted Information.” All the material is evidence-based and written by specialists from the University of Michigan Breast Care Center along with experts in health communication.
