Yappilakkanam is described in "Tholkappiyam", the oldest one among all the tamil grammar books that are available to us today. Not only this, some or more of the texts that are described in Tholkappiyam are still in existence. Some of the literary texts that came after the period of tholkappiyam are not described in the same. Such that, the enhancemetns to yappilakkanam that took place in later periods are best described in the work, "Yapparukalakkarikai". This book is now used widely by those who practice yappilakkanam. Amutacakarar is the author of this book. He was born and brought up in pandya region and later came to thondai region and lived there.
