VigDroid allows you to sense the vigour of vegetation around you. If you are a farmer or a viticulturist, or simply a green passionate or even just a curious person, VigDroid will give you the ability to turn your smartphone into a simple and handy yet powerful vegetation sensor!

VigDroid takes advantage of the ability of smartphone cameras to sense not only in the visible part of the electromagnetic spectrum but also - even if only partially - in the Near Infrared band.

Studio Terradat has developed specific algorithms in order to enhance the data sensed by the smartphone camera and to be able to detect biomass amount and its health conditions.

The data are shown using a scale ranging from 0 (no vigour) to 10 (maximum vigour). The sensor sensitivity may be adjusted using the + and - buttons.

VigDroid lets you save the sensed data in form of a KML file. You may open it in Google Earth in order to see a georeferenced balloon containing the monitored vigour data and Lat/Lon/picture of the sampling location.

In order to be allowed to save the geotagged data, you need to turn on your GPS receiver before launching VigDroid and wait until a GPS fix has been reached.

You also need writing permits on your SD card: to save the sensed data, VigDroid needs to write into the folder named "/mnt/sdcard/VigDroid-data". KML files, along with the linked images, are saved in that specific folder. When copying files from smartphone to PC in order to open the KML files, please be sure to copy also the corresponding linked images(KML and image filenames are "date/time stamped").

VigDroid is intended to be used outdoor, in good lighting conditions. Under conditions other than this, VigDroid's algorithms may fail in estimating the presence, abundance and health condition of vegetation. VigDroid vigour estimates may be affected by lighting conditions, presence of shadows, or by the specific sun/target/sensor geometry.

Simply point your smartphone to a green landscape, tree or single leaf in order to monitor its vegetational status both in terms of biomass amount and health conditions, and try to compare different situations and statuses.

Use the horizontal rulers in order to collect data in comparable situations: align the rulers with the horizon line or other horizontal landmarks.

Before to download the application, please take a simple test in order to assess your smartphone's capability in Near Infrared detection: put the camera in front of your TV remote control, then push any of the remote buttons. You should see a flashing light in the smartphone screen (what cannot be seen by the human eye!).
