This application allows users to collect data for the Utility-Based Application Management (UBAM) research project at MSR and UCLA. It includes SystemSens, a system monitoring tool developed at the Center for Embedded Networked Sensing at UCLA, but it is not the official SystemSens version. It collects application usage and network location information, and allows the user to set their preferred app priorities with a sortable list. After installing, access the menu to register your email address if you wish the researchers to use your data for the UBAM project. The instructions for participating in the study are as follows:

Install, Open App & Enter your Email

When you open UBAM and have not entered an email address yet, it will prompt you to enter your email. This allows the researchers to associate your IMEI with you for your follow up interview.

Think of CONTEXTS (e.g. home, work, weekend, shopping) that are important to you

You will have the chance to enter this later. Contexts can refer to one or more place(s) and/or time(s).

For each Context, Order the Apps by IMPORTANCE to You in that Context

UBAM shows a list of the installed apps on your phone. You should order the apps you use in order of their importance to you. It may help to ask yourself "If I could only have one app on my phone, which would it be? Then repeat the question "What if I had only 2, 3, etc." for the second, third apps and so on.

Enter the CONTEXT for Which the Order Matters

Once the apps are in the order you want, hit the save button and enter the context for which the list is relevant, like "school", "home", "church", etc. You can have different orderings for each location, if the priority of the apps are different. For example, at work email might be the most important app to you, while at home it could be the phone dialer or Angry Birds or alarm clock. You choose the name of each context, and later you can provide the address or GPS coordinates that they correspond to. Contexts can also be time-based, so you could save orderings for home in the morning vs. home in the evening.

Don’t Worry About Ordering Every App (“DON’T CARE” apps)

In the UBAM app, to order the list there are two operations you can use. First, you can tap and drag the icon (on the left hand side) up or down to adjust the ordering. You have to drag the icon itself. The other thing you can do is drag the icon to the right side of the screen, which will send the app up to the top of the list. There will be many more apps listed than you use, so first use the swipe to send the apps you use and care about to the top, then rearrange those apps to be in the exact order by dragging them up and down by the icon. After the study, a researcher will ask you to specify the cutoff where the ordering stops mattering. For example, there may be 40 listed apps, but if you only use 10, you only need to order those. Then at the end of the study just tell us to ignore everything after the 10th app in the list.

What is Logged

SystemSens collects data in the background and uploads it to our server. It logs of the apps you use and the location of the phone. Location is only used to distinguish which of your specified locations you are in. After the study, we will confirm that your data has been uploaded and then you can uninstall it. Data uploads when the phone is charged (to avoid using battery). The uploaded data is on the order of hundreds of MB (~170/week), so try to do your uploading when on Wi-Fi if you have a limited data plan.

After you have collected data for a couple weeks, one of the researchers will contact you to obtain the rest of the information:

• Meaning of each context in terms of time/geo coordinates

• Cutoff point for “don’t care” apps
