Touch the Museum is a new viewing program and guide designed to make the collections and buildings of the National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo's Ueno Park more widely known to the public.
The NMWA was established in 1959 on the basis of the Matsukata Collection which was returned to Japan by the French government. The Matsukata Collection consists primarily of French Impressionist paintings, and sculptures by Auguste Rodin. The museum has continued to acquire new art works and broaden its holdings. Today our collection of Western art works ranges in period from late medieval to the early 20th century. The museum is also renowned for its unique Main Building designed by the French architect Le Corbusier.
The art works included in Touch the Museum are available for viewing in the Permanent Collection Galleries of the NMWA. By touching the images of the paintings on your display, you can select which art work you want to explore further. The contents of this program, with its images of art works in other collections, images from the NHK Archives and recorded personal commentaries by the NMWA director, curators and architectural historians, will enhance your art viewing experience.
We hope that you will enjoy a new level of art viewing experience by using this Touch the Museum program as you stand in front of actual art works.
