Safe Travels keeps its users appraised of the crime rates in areas where they live or visit. The application tracks the location of Safe Travels users and informs them of nearby criminal activity reports.

Safe Travels can help people avoid being the victim of a crime while they are traveling in an unfamiliar part of the

city. Using a mobile device’s GPS and data network, Safe Travels has the ability to track the location of the user and also knows where each reported crime in the city has been committed.

Some of the features are:

Drive Mode - While driving in the city of Chicago, Safe Travels - Drive Mode, displays readings of the crime level for the past 12 months within a 4 block radius of the current location and the crime level of the area approximately one mile ahead. Drive Mode will automatically recognize changes in location and refreshes the reading while traveling through the city. Large brightly colored icons and audio cues are used for the alerts for hands-free use.

Spot Check - The Spot Check feature gives an immediate crime level reading of the current location. This is useful if someone finds themselves in unfamiliar territory. Perhaps coming out of restaurant at night or trying to find a parking space. The user can then tap on the initial crime level alert and view a listing of the number of each crime types that has been committed. Additionally, one can enter an address or landmark anywhere in the city and receive a crime level reading of that area.

Crime Map - The Crime Map feature allows the user to enter an address or landmark in the city to view a map of that location with markers showing where each crime committed within a 2 block radius as well as the date and type of each crime. This is useful for people considering visiting a place in the city they are not familiar with, such as the National Museum of Mexican Art. It also great for people considering moving into the city that want to be familiar with the type of crime that is being committed in that immediate area.

Chicago GPS - This feature simulates Drive Mode for anyone anywhere in the country. The feature will set the app's coordinates to the approximate center of Chicago. The user will receive updates as if they were in the city of Chicago. This will be used primarily for testing.

Settings - Allows users to change the Drive Mode refresh interval and switch sound on or off.

Safe Travels uses data from the Chicago Crime Database. Since we do not control the data we can not guarantee the accuracy of the data. The Crime level thresholds of SAFE, CAUTION and DANGER are derived from rough averages of crime levels in the city. Each individuals personal tolerance of crime may vastly vary from these thresholds. Each crime type is weighted equally. There is no differentiation of perceived severity of crime types.

Safe Travels is meant to be an additional useful resource for determining crime levels and not a replacement for common sense and other indicators of crime levels.
