The San Francisco State University Sierra Nevada Field Campus (SNFC) is located along the banks of the North Yuba river near Yuba Pass on California Hwy 49. All of the reptiles and amphibians (herps) included in this guide are commonly found in the immediate area. The SNFCHerps app supports field identification and collection of personal observation data. Two tab bar buttons are used to access field identification tools: Families and Species. The Families view displays the complete SNFC Herps List organized first by scientific family name, and then by species within the selected family. The Species view displays a list of all species in the complete SNFC Herps List organized alphabetically by species name, with a standard search bar to restrict the herps displayed.Once a specific herp has been selected, a Herp view is displayed containing both scientific names and common names and a photograph. The Observe button in the upper right of the navigation bar is used to collect personal observation data. Personal observation data includes the scientific and common names of the plant, the time and date of the observation, the current GPS coordinates, and optionally a photograph (the camera button is located in the upper right of this view). The Save Observation button is used to save a copy of this information to the onBoard SQLite database.Observations are displayed using the Observations tab bar button. Individual observations can be deleted using the standard editing controls. A more detailed description of each observation, including a photograph if one was taken for this observation, is displayed by selecting the disclosure indicator next to the observation list item. Observations can be shared via email (the share icon is in the upper right corner of the observation view). Users running iOS6 can also share using Twitter and Facebook, as well as email. This software was developed at San Francisco State University by Prof. Marguerite Murphy, Computer Science Department. Photos are from the California Herps web site http://www.californiaherps.com/, copyright Gary Navis (grynaf@yahoo.com) and are used with permission.Errata, suggestions and comments are encouraged!
