Solar thermal is an Open Educational Resource created by FusedWorks(http://www.fusedworks.com) team from Doncaster College(http://www.don.ac.uk). Within the JISC (http://www.jisc.ac.uk/) funded project ‘Renewable, Environmental and Construction Technology Open Resource – REaCTOR, this application has been created alongside 7 others:

The resources are available on stand-alone platforms and on mobile devices. Each resource is free to use and can be used as teaching and learning support material.

The Solar Thermal resource introduces the technology whereby solar energy is used to heat water in a domestic setting. The resource includes an introduction to the principles behind solar thermal technology. Users can examine the solar thermal equipment in a typical domestic arrangement, using detailed, fully-interactive 3D models of the solar collector, vacuum tubes, and other elements. Heat flow through the system is presented with a typical combustion boiler scenario and the concept of hot water generation in various weather conditions is presented. The electrical integration of the system, the system control mechanisms, and the physical installation of the solar thermal system are all shown in an intuitive, user-controlled, and interactive manner.
