The Quincunx is an apparatus invented by Sir Francis Galton for use in his study of the binomial and normal distributions (about 1865).
The apparatus consists of a number of pins arranged in the form of Pascal's triangle. Balls are dropped on the top pin and as a ball hits a pin on the way down it goes left or right with probability 0.5. A ball eventually ends up in one of the bins at the bottom and the number of balls in each bin is counted. It is seen that the process results in a binomial distribution of the balls.
There are 10 rows and 600 balls in this version of the Quincunx.
