“Manhattan 1905 Then and Now” allows you to compare Manhattan as it appeared in the years between 1900 and 1910 with the present. This is accomplished by positioning an overlay containing a bird's-eye-view of Manhattan in that time period over a current bing map of Manhattan.
To prepare the overlay, using mapping software approximately 250 points (primarily intersections of streets) on the drawing were matched to actual points on the bing map. The result was that many points of interest (Bryant Park, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Union Square, Central Park and many more) display an almost perfect correspondence, while others may be a bit off, perhaps as much as a half-block. The far Northwest and Northeast are the least accurate.
Using the slider in the program, you can display or hide the overlay. For the current map, it may be viewed in either Road mode or Aerial mode, selectable by buttons on the application bar. The program opens centered between the NYC Public Library and Grand Central Terminal. You may return to this location by tapping the reset button on the application bar. You may center the map on your current GPS location using that menu item. Of course, this would only make sense if you were somewhere in Manhattan.
To download the map tiles for the 1905 overlay, you need a data connection. To be able to center the map on your current location, you need to enable location services.
Have fun. See how well you know Manhattan in a time before the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, the NYC Public Library and all those Trump buildings.
