This app, brought to you by the Jesuit Institute South Africa, contains a daily reflection for each of the 47 days of Lent 2014 from Ash Wednesday (5 March) to Easter Sunday (20 April). Lent 2014 is an especially important time in South Africa since it marks the 20th anniversary of the first democratic elections, and the time of preparation for the elections in May 2014, the first since the death of Nelson Mandela.
Each day begins with a specially drawn image that captures the theme of the day; a quotation from the Lenten readings or from other Scriptures or a political activist; a meditation on the theme; and a prayer.
Although written from a Christian perspective we believe that the reflections will appeal to people of all faiths and none. And although written with a particular perspective on South Africa in 2014, we believe that the reflections will appeal to anyone interested in the relationship between religion and politics.
Each Monday you will receive the reflections for that week. But you will also have access to previous reflections so you can navigate to any past day if you want to return to that theme.
Each meditation can be read on its own. But careful examination will reveal a pattern, rooted in reflection on the past, as an attempt to understand the present, with a view to a possible future.
Certain themes recur: the interconnection between God working in biblical ‘history’ and in the history of South Africa; our moral responsibility to make democracy in South Africa work; the memory of the 1994 transition to democracy and the anticipation of the 2014 election; and the need for a critical reading of where we’ve come from in order that we might keep our future accountable, for ourselves and generations still to come.
Inspired by his commitment to connecting faith and politics, the author Fr Anthony Egan SJ has dedicated this work to Denis Hurley, Archbishop of Durban, (9 November 1915-13 February 2004) and ‘to all who continue our struggle for liberation’.
