Origin
Blues music is believed to have originated in the late 1800s. The genre emerged as a distinctive type of
African-American music, which had its roots in traditional work songs and hollers sung by the workers
during their labors, as well as black religious songs chanted using vocal harmony, and traditional
European folk music. The African influence is visible in the structure of the songs, which the slaves
brought with them from Africa. This very traditional African style of music was soon combined with the
folk music of the white settlers in North America, and the many genres combined to produce a new style
of music.
Early Blues
While blues formed as a genre in the 1800s, there was no real structure to it and no professional blues
singers until the early 20th century. This is because, at that time, the United States still resembled a
collection of small rural communities. This meant that there was no real communication between singers
and musicians and no simple way of hearing or being influenced by other blues artists. This all changed
in the early 1900s, as people began to move to large industrial cities, such as Chicago and Detroit, and
groups of singers began to congregate and perform together. Then, blues music suddenly became
enormously popular.
Modern Blues
Since the late 1970s, when many more white bands took to the blues, there was a resurgence of interest
in the blues among parts of the African-American population, which had taken to jazz, hip-hop, and
other kinds of music. This saw the blues reach new heights of popularity, and the genre has never been
out of the popular music charts in some form since that time. Perhaps the most visible example of blues
music entering the mainstream was when Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi starred in the 1980 movie, "The
Blues Brothers." The film saw some of the most instrumental living blues artists work and perform
together, and the movie featured cameo appearances from blues greats, such as Ray Charles, James
Brown, Cab Calloway, and John Lee Hooker Blues music is undeniably one of the most important and iconic forms of music, and it has helped shape the entire industry. Some of the biggest bands of the enormously popular rock 'n' roll era were
undeniably influenced by or sometimes entirely influenced by blues music. This includes some of the
biggest bands of the era, including the Rolling Stones, the Animals, Fleetwood Mac, John Mayall, and
many more. All of those mainstream acts left their own marks on popular music, but they all have one
thing in common, music styled on the blues. Indeed, the blues has left an indelible mark on almost all
aspects of popular music and certainly was the driving force behind not only rock music but also jazz,
pop, and even some orchestral works
