Helmores was founded in 1699 by a gentleman named William Helmore, who handled sales of cottages, farms and land from his premises in Newton St Cyres near Exeter. The firm quickly grew in success and for the next three centuries was passed down through the Helmore family from father to son. Just after the First World War, Frederick John Helmore was joined in the business by his son Herbert Mark (Bert) who unfortunately had no sons to take on the business when he passed away in 1965.
