One of the tools used by paranormal investigators is known as the “flashlight experiment” in which the investigators place a flashlight nearby, with the cap twisted just to the point where the flashlight turns on and off. It is believed then that spirits or entities can manipulate the flashlight into turning on and off. Typically, questions are asked of the spirit and the answers interpreted by the turning on and off of the flashlight, i.e. “Did you die in this house? Please flash the light twice for yes or once for no.”

I myself have witnessed sessions that utilized a flashlight in this manner, and while I am very skeptical and believe that in many cases, heating and cooling of the metal switch contacts or even small mechanical vibrations are responsible, I must admit I have witnessed some very believable communication in this way. Which brings us to the Android device....

Most people in the paranormal investigating field agree that spirits can manipulate electromagnetic fields. I have captured some very fascinating EVP and as one who is very much into science and history but who has also experienced many unexplainable phenomena since childhood, I cannot help that I believe there is something to this sort of thing. As a former broadcast engineer for radio stations with transmitter powers up to 50,000 watts, I had the opportunity to test many pieces of equipment used for investigating, in extremely high RF (radio frequency) field environments. EVP and other phenomena that seem to be influenced by fluctuations in the electromagnetic field fascinate me and I have conducted many experiments and have many theories on this sort of thing.

The typical Android device is nearly perfect for experimenting through creative programming, due to their built-in sensors, such as the magnetic field sensors, typically used for measuring compass headings.

This software uses the magnetic field sensor to simulate a "flashlight experiment” only instead of a real flashlight and metal contacts that are very close to each other and subject to heating and cooling, this “flashlight” is triggered by fluctuations in the nearby magnetic field. It self-calibrates to the ambient magnetic field and will adapt to slow changes in its surroundings. Whenever the magnetic field surrounding the Android device changes rapidly, the “flashlight” will light up. Using it is simple. Place the device on a stable surface away from sources of magnetism or magnetic fluctuations (wires, lights, etc.). Start the program and does an initial self-calibration for 10 seconds to measure the amount of ambient noise in the magnetic field near the device. You can then set the sensitivity if it appears to be too sensitive. Changing the device position from portrait to landscape or vice-versa will cause it to re-initialize. From there, simply sit back and ask any nearby spirits to try to turn the “flashlight” on and off by disturbing the magnetic field around the device. If the flashlight seems to be flashing aimlessly, either move it away from the source of man-made electrical noise or decrease the sensitivity using the slidebar.

That's all there is to it. Enjoy and please direct any questions, comments, hate mail or whatever, to ceili@kellimcmillan.com. I am a very busy programmer, Mom and wife so I answer as I am able to. This is a free program so don't expect endless support. Buyers of my paid software and services are my first priority. Use your imagination and have fun.
