Alternation of auditory feedback has, for a long time now, been known to have a positive effect on people who stutter.
Masking noise (e.g. white noise), delayed auditory feedback (DAF - i.e. hearing one’s own voice a fraction later), frequency alteration (changing the pitch of the sound) have all been known to have a positive effect on the fluency of the stutterer. A number of possible reasons have been offered that try to explain the success some stutterers have with these techniques. They range from a simple distraction to compensation for a defect in stutterers’ auditory awareness. Of course, use of auditory feedback device should not be seen as a magical cure for all stutterers. In particular, it doesn’t address negative psychological side-effects and feelings related to stuttering as other, traditional, treatments do. However, it had undeniably been shown to help stutterers reduce the severity of stuttering.
StutterNation’s has made an implementation of just such a device.
