INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Press MENU to set distance units as you wish from miles and kilometers.

2. When you see lightning, press lightning icon to begin to calculate.

3. It will count time for us until we hear a sound of thunder.

4. Press thunder icon with thunder sound to end this calculation.

5. We can get a result of distance here with direction and distance.

USES:

Fun and educational, it's also useful for outdoor activities where lightning may be a hazard (handy for lifeguards, referees, playground helpers, etc.).

Not recommended for artillery spotting...

Because the electrostatic discharge of terrestrial lightning can superheat the air to plasma temperatures along the length of the discharge channel in a short duration, kinetic theory could dictate gaseous molecules undergo a rapid increase in pressure and thus expand outward from the lightning creating a shock wave audible as thunder. Perception of the sonic characteristics can be further complicated by factors such as the irregular and possibly branching geometry of the lightning channel, by acoustic echoing from terrain, and by the typically multiple-stroke characteristic of the lightning strike.
