X-501 was a giant rock in the asteroid belt. It had a wealth of unidentified mineral resources. A colony was established on X-501 to research these unknown materials. During a routine expriment an unstable reaction set off a chain reaction blowing the asteroid apart. The colonists managed to flee in several fleets but will not get far. The asteroid was blown into millions of pieces. Combined with the asteroids already in the belt escape was almost impossible.
However... adapting their mining lasers they have managed to produce a weapon that could just save them. With their knowledge of the asteroids unstable minerals and the CrossRay Mining System they may just blast their way to freedom.
