He's a soul singer whose rich crooning has often been compared to early Stevie Wonder, as well as such throwback singers as Mayer Hawthorne and Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings. Hawley has merged old and new into a pair of albums, "Side 1" and "Side 2," that put a fresh spin on classic sounds.

Hawley grew up in a family of preachers and therapists, drawing on the former to hone his intense on-stage charisma and finding in the latter a sense of wit that infuses his perceptive lyrics. He honed his vocal abilities singing a cappella gospel music in church before his grandfather exposed him to an old Ray Charles record during his teen years. That led him to a journey through the classic soul music of the 60s and 70s, and he ended up spending his 20s touring the country with nothing more than an acoustic guitar and his dog, Fargo.

Along the way, Hawley wrote songs, won awards, and eventually gathered a band that melds soul and rock, with an infusion of folk, to create a unique sound that audiences love.
