BlindShell is a application providing access to the Android system for visually impaired users. The application is controlled by simple touch gestures. As a feedback there is Text To Speech together with vibrates and sound responses.
BlindShell contains following apps: Call, Messages, Contacts, Alarm, Notes, Voice Recorder, Calendar, Book Reader, Color Recognition, Settings, Information About State, Favorites and Missed Events. There is also a unique, easy-to-use keyboard for writing numbers and texts.
This is 15 days trial version where you can try all applications and functions. To continue in using the application after 15 days you have to buy the application BlindShell Full Version Unlock that is available on Google Play.
Recommendations before you begin:
- Turn off TalkBack;
- Disable the PIN code on your SIM card;
- Turn off screen lock;
- In the phone settings in menu "Accessibility", choose the option "Power button ends call";
- We recommend you to use voices from the Acapela group with our application;
- If you recently installed Skype, Viber, WhatsApp or some other call application, you should choose BlindShell as your default application for calling;
- For Android 4.4 KitKat or higher devices - For correct work with SMS, BlindShell has to be set as Default SMS app: Go to Settings -> Select More (Wireless & Networks section) -> In Default SMS app list choose BlindShell.
An application can be controlled using just a few easy touch gestures anywhere on the phone screen:
- A short touch with one finger to right/left part of the screen - goes to the next/previous item;
- A long touch with one finger - confirms current choice/accepts call/stop alarm;
- A long touch with two fingers - goes back/rejects call/snooze alarm;
- A short touch with two fingers - stops the screen reader/repeats last information or gives information about an incoming call;
- Hold one finger on the screen and touch with another finger N times - goes to the item that is in Nth place in the list;
- Quick movement with one finger from the bottom part of the screen to upper part - starts the application Information about state.
Keyboard control:
A big advantage provided by BlindShell is its built-in keyboard, which is very easy to use.
To enter a character or a number on the keyboard, place one finger on the phone screen. By holding and moving your finger you'll move along the alphanumeric keyboard. To write a character, hold the same finger on the screen and make a short touch with other finger. With a repeated touch you can choose the next characters. To confirm your choice, stop touching the screen, this is accompanied by a sound. You'll cancel your choice by moving your finger to the top border of the screen. In the lower part of the screen there are buttons that vary by the type of input (eg. Make call, Send SMS). They are controlled in the same as other buttons on the keyboard.
IMPORTANT: Closing the application:
When you are in Settings application, you can bring advanced settings by quickly moving with one finger from the upper part of the screen to the bottom part. Here it is possible to choose the action "Advanced:Exit" to shutdown the application. This choice is hidden because we presume that the end user will never exit this application.
Application help:
BlindShell also contains a built-in help, which can be shown by long pressing the lock button. In Help, you can move between all parts with the same gestures as in the rest of the application. The help varies for different parts of the application, depending on the item from which it has been opened.
We tested this application with real visually impaired users in order to find out as much as we could about their specific needs. We also closely work with SONS organization and Dedina center.
BlindShell runs on OS Android 4 and higher.
