ABRA is an acronym for "Algal Bloom Report Assistant". The ABRA iPhone application helps you gather information about an algal bloom sighting for later upload to our central server. The sighting page contains mandatory and optional data fields with a decision tree to guide you through the steps in identifying the algae type. Each sighting may include a photo to assist the data curators who will validate your sighting data for inclusion in the Coastal Algal Bloom (CABER) web portal.Many species of cyanobacteria and algae that inhabit coastal waters provide food and habitat for many invertebrate and vertebrate animals. However, the delivery of high nutrient loads into estuaries and enclosed bays may stimulate the rapid and unabated growth of some cyanobacterial and/or algal species, resulting in the formation of blooms. These blooms are harmful to the marine ecosystem and humans who depend on it. The CABER portal is optimized for South-Eastern Queensland (Australia) waters, but sighting reports made through ABRA, or via the web portal itself are not location restricted.For more information, visit:http://algalblooms.org
